Unit Plans: 720 Learning Activities for Grade 5 English Language Arts & Literature based on the new LearnAlberta curriculum from Alberta Education. Student Learning Outcomes Included: Reading: Genres, Fiction, Nonfiction, Poetry
I can examine how text genres, forms, and structures support and enhance communication of literary texts by:
a. Genres: Examine the purpose of a variety of genres, forms and structures of digital and nondigital sources texts and categorize texts according to a variety of fiction sub-genres.
b. Fiction: Examine the organization of text features and identify information that is important and a variety of fictional text structures, including flash-forward and theme. Examine the main characters and events and describe the characters based on what they say, think, or do or what others say and think about them. Develop reading stamina by engaging with text that is personally enjoyable.
c. Nonfiction: Examine the organizational structures and discuss a variety of opinions regarding the structure, content, or source of information expressed. Develop reading stamina by engaging with text that is personally enjoyable.
d. Poetry: Listen to the artful expression (beauty or emotion) of stories (ideas) in a poem, identify the figurative language and poetic structures (including stanzas) that contribute to creative expression. Recite or sing a memorized poem or create lyrical poetry.
